Refrigerated air conversion is one of the most common HVAC projects in El Paso, and it is also one of the most misunderstood. Homeowners often expect a cooler to come off the roof and a condenser to go in its place. In practice, the duct system, the return air, the electrical panel and the roof itself all factor into the work.

Why homeowners convert

Evaporative cooling works by pulling outside air across wet pads. In dry desert heat that is efficient and effective. When monsoon humidity arrives in mid to late summer, the same equipment loses much of its ability to cool, which is the point at which many households decide the trade-off is no longer worth it.

Other common reasons include repeated cooler repairs, water damage around a roof-mounted unit, and a preference for keeping the house closed rather than running with windows cracked for relief air.

Ductwork is usually the biggest variable

Evaporative systems move a large volume of air at low pressure, and their duct systems are often sized and sealed accordingly. Refrigerated systems need different airflow characteristics and a proper return air path.

Some duct runs can be reused. Many cannot. The only way to know is an inspection of the existing layout, sizing, sealing and insulation condition, along with where a central return can realistically be located.

Electrical and placement

• Refrigerated equipment draws significantly more power than an evaporative cooler, so panel capacity and circuit availability are reviewed early.
• Equipment can be roof-mounted as a package unit or installed as a split system, depending on the home and the duct layout.
• The opening left by the removed cooler has to be properly closed, not temporarily patched.
