Swamp Cooler or Refrigerated Air: Choosing for an El Paso Home

There is no single right answer for every home. Evaporative cooling and refrigerated air each have real strengths in this climate, and the better choice depends on the house, the ductwork and what you expect during the humid weeks of late summer.
How each system cools
An evaporative cooler pulls outdoor air through wet pads, and the water evaporating into that air lowers its temperature. It needs dry air to work and it needs a relief path so air can exit the building.
A refrigerated system cools and recirculates indoor air using a refrigerant circuit. It works in a closed house and does not depend on outdoor humidity.
Where evaporative cooling does well
- Lower installation cost than a refrigerated conversion
- Effective through the long stretch of dry heat that dominates the local season
- Simple mechanical parts that are inexpensive to replace
- Continuous fresh air exchange rather than recirculated air
Where it falls short
- Performance drops noticeably during monsoon humidity
- Hard water and dust mean seasonal pad, pump and scale service
- Roof-mounted units can leak and cause water damage over time
- The house cannot be closed up while the system runs
What refrigerated air asks for in return
Refrigerated air costs more to install, especially when the duct system has to be replaced, and it draws more electrical power. In exchange, it cools consistently regardless of what the weather is doing outside.
For many households the deciding factor is those few weeks each summer when a swamp cooler simply cannot keep up.
